Wood, glass, brass, steel, bakelite
Used to control electrical current by varying the resistance
8” in diameter
This is a manual rheostat by J. Pitkin & Co. A rheostat is used to control electrical current by varying the resistance. This rheostat is adjusted by a large thumb screw in the center of the instrument. It rotates a contact over a coiled wire which adds or lowers resistance as the contact is moved. The contact tip is adjustable with a thumb screw and there are two lacquered brass terminals on the base.
It is approximately eight inches in diameter. The base, which appears to be made of mahogany is capped with golden-lacquered brass that transitions to a beveled glass cover. The nameplate reads, “J. PITKIN & CO. LTD. MAKERS LONDON.”
The instrument is in good condition!
James Pitkin is listed in “Barometer Makers and Retailers 1660 - 1900” by Banfield Edwin. It says on page 171 that he “worked from 1858-1900 for Opt & Phil IM London.” He was also briefly in partnership with T. W. Short who later formed the company, Short and Manson.
Late 19th century.
